Physicians, veterinarians and allied health professionals will once again have the opportunity to share ideas and philosophies during a collaborative seminar with a focus on zoonotic diseases. This event is scheduled for November 18, 2009, at the Westin Hotel, in Providence, RI.
This conference was developed as a sequel to New England’s first large collaborative event, which was held in RI in 2007 and drew record attendance from physicians and veterinarians. Both health care groups recognize the enormous need in the medical and veterinary medical communities for a committed partnership that will aid in the identification and prevention of common diseases shared by man and animals. Coastal Medical and the Companion Animal Parasite Council are co-hosting this groundbreaking seminar, which is another step towards fostering the collaborative ties that support the American Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s “One Health” initiative. This policy is designed to strengthen and improve animal and human health.
The half-day-long seminar will feature physician and veterinary experts in zoonotic diseases, and will include Dwight Bowman, PhD, Ed Breitschwerdt, DVM, Richard Glew, MD and Steven Opal, MD. Dr. Breitschwerdt is a veterinary infectious disease expert with a focus on zoonotic diseases such as Bartonella. Dr. Bowman is a veterinary parasitologist and a well-known advocate for the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases, and Dr. Glew is an infectious disease specialist at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. Opal is a nationally-known expert on emerging diseases. The seminar format will be a panel discussion with a moderator, with questions to follow each section.
The conference will conclude with a catered cocktail reception. Continuing Education credits will be available for physicians, veterinarians and nurses.
